A Brief History - Spain

Brief History of Spain

Spain is located in southwestern Europe and it occupies 85% of the Iberian Peninsula. Many diverse cultures have gone into making Spain, including the Iberians, the Celts, the Lusitanians, the Tartessians, the Castilians, the Moors, and the Romans among others. For many years the Iberian Peninsula was home to many of those settlers; however, the Romans fully conquered the peninsula around 19 BC. Eventually, in the 5th century BC, the Roman Empire fell and Spain, which was called Hispania at that time, became a territory of the Germanics tribes of Vandals, Suebi and Visigoth. By 718 AD., there was the Arab Islamic conquest of the peninsula and the Islamic Al-Andalus became a prominent group in the country. However, there was much warfare between the Muslims and the Christians who had inhabited the area before the Arab Islamic conquest; and, by 1250, the Christians had gained back control of almost all of Hispania. The 13th century saw the growth and prominence of the Castillian or Spanish language in the Kingdom of Castille, one of the Christian Kingdoms of Hispania. Early Modern Spain, the Kingdom of Spain, began in the era of the 15th century when the Kingdom of Castille and the Kingdom of Aragon were united through the marriage of Queen Isabella of Castille and King Ferdinand II. Present day Spain is defined by the status of Spain’s autonomous entities preceded by the Spanish Constitution of 1978.
