A Brief History - Italy
Italy has a rich and complex history that has shaped Western civilization. It was home to the Roman Empire (27 BCE – 476 CE), one of the most powerful civilizations in history, which laid the foundation for modern law, government, and engineering. After the empire's fall, Italy fragmented into various city-states, including Venice, Florence, and Milan, which thrived during the Renaissance (14th–17th century), a period of immense cultural and artistic achievement.
In the 19th century, Italy underwent unification, becoming a unified nation in 1861 under King Victor Emmanuel II. The 20th century saw Italy involved in both World Wars, and after World War II, it transitioned from a monarchy to a republic in 1946. Today, Italy is a key player in global politics, culture, and the European Union, known for its art, fashion, cuisine, and historical landmarks.
